On 11th October we celebrated Ada Lovelace day with a day of workshops and inspiring talks, attended by 50 school students from years 9 through to sixth form.

The technology industry, in particular software development, has a diversity problem. Even the industry giants such as Apple and Facebook are struggling to get a more balanced workforce, and the guardian is no different, with women making up just 20% of the Digital department.

On Thursday, SheCanCode screened highly acclaimed film CODE: Debugging the Gender Gap to 75 techies over popcorn + prosecco at Google Campus in London.

The film, which raised more than $86,000 via Indigogo to produce, explores both the explicit and implicit reasons behind the gender diversity gap in the tech industry. Featuring key policymakers, coders and educators from institutions and organisations like Pinterest, GitHub, ETSY and Black Girls Code, the film investigates the decline in female programmers since the 1980s and talks about the resounding effects of not addressing the 'bugs' that are continuing to discourage women from entering and remaining in the industry.

Ada Lovelace was a C19th mathematician often credited with writing the first computer programme. To celebrate Ada Lovelace Day, the Guardian has invited 50 girls from London schools to spend time with the women who create our digital products. They will find out about careers in tech, have taster sessions on UX, product, data and coding as well as the chance to watch excerpts from the film CODE: Debugging the Gender Gap.

Robin Hauser Reynolds, Director/Producer of the documentary film, CODE: Debugging the Gender Gap, discusses the influence of women and minorities in technology and how diversity equals innovation.

You have been touring the world with CODE?

We premiered at Tribeca Film Festival, April 2015, so we’ve been on the road almost a year.

I’ve have taken it to the UK, India, all over the United States, in Dublin and France, and then Germany – it’s crazy. It’s actually screened in 15 countries now.

We sold the rights to BBC Persia – they’re broadcasting it in Iran.

We knew we were making a film that would be of interest in California, and probably New York, about the lack of women and people of color in computer science engineering and tech.

With feminism to the fore this week following International Women’s Day, Expedia held a private screening of Code: Debugging the Gender Gap, a documentary which served to portray how gender issues are evolving as we delve deeper into the world of technology.

Both the film and the panel discussion that followed highlighted some of the critical reasons behind the lack of female engineers, software developers, programmers, and (to use the umbrella term) ‘coders’ in the work force. One myth that was immediately put to rest, it was that women lack the interest, talent, or both in the field.
